How can I help my little girl to sing well?

Q: How can I help my little girl to sing well? Now, I am not a good singer! Not a dying cat, but I wouldn't audition for X-factor! lol. okay, my daughter is 8 and a half and next week her Brownie group are doing auditions for their big Christmas musical play...it involves about 8 packs of brownies/guides and scouts/cubs from 7-15 years altogether and is quite a 'big deal'. They are holding the auditions and my daughter insists she is going to be Joseph....(me doubtful of course, bless her, and i gently explained this role may well go to one of the older ones- but hey I admire her confidence - and confident she is!) I asked what she was going to sing and she said a song from high school musical- breaking free. She sang it for me, and whilst she wasn't terrible, (to me it was perfect and beautiful) in the harsh world of drama and older people, they probably will be picking 'the best'. Thing is, i suggested she be an angel but she was not happy with that...she came down to accepting she may be Inkeeper number 3 (that role gets to sing & speak) I would like to offer advice to help her sing better...but as I am not a good singer I really don't know where to begin. She is not awful and carries an okay tune and has some strength to her voice...any tips? Is she still very young to be able to sing properly, or do you think she should be able to sing at her age (no leona lewis but you know, nicely etc) thanks for any advice for her! Category

A: I don't know if there is anything you can do short term, but my husband thinks that the american idol popstar helps our daughter sing. Like yours, she sounds wonderful to me, buuuut in the real world? I guess I will take my husbands word for it because he is a great singer(his sister too) both were in bands in their younger years and both say you need training to get better though neither had formal lessons - some of it is just genetics and you hope they got some of the "good singing" ones if they really like to do it.
