To other parents of kids with severe ADHD?

Q: My son has hyperactivity disorder-badly. He never, never stops talking. He can't sit still more than one second without tipping his chair, runs off wildly at the first chance you let his hand go or turn your head, never listens...on and on. He's seen three primary care drs who all said he is one of the worst cases of hyperactivity they have ever seen, but they can't prescribe him meds, only a child psychiatrist can do that (because of his insurance). There is a 6 month waiting list to see one where I live, and meanwhile my son has started school and hasn't had one day without being pulled from class for not sitting still. I am so frustrated!!! There are times I feel violently angry at him, because i'm always in such a mood of heightened anxiety over him bouncing around non stop. Many times i've had to have my mother come over to care for him (ex husband left years ago) because I couldn't be around him anymore. I have never and would never physically harm him, but I do snap and yell at him sometimes. It makes me feel so guilty. How do you cope???? By the way, this is not a problem caused by lack of discipline on my part, which any parent of an ADHD child will know well. Duckie- very true. My son is way ahead of his class in reading and math, and is very sharp and intelligent, so a special class is out of the question. The school officials tested him early and said if anything he belongs in a gifted program, but his behavioral things have to be dealt with first.

A: My 9 yr old son is severely adhd. His pediatrician was prescribing meds, but when he couldn't take any of them, due to one problem or another, we went to our local mental hospital. they have an outpatient plan and we see a wonderful child psychiatrist. we have finally found a medicine that works wonders at school. By the time he gets home, the med has already worn off, but video games are great for these children. the graphics have like a million images and their little brains stay busy. he plays football as well. My son is the top in his class especially at math and spelling. he has been in the spelling bee for the past 2 years. Adhd children have very high iq's because their brains are always thinking. You will get there, too. Just keep working on finding the right dr and the right meds. Hang in there...
