When did your breastfed baby sleep through the night?

Q: And I mean, all night, not just one 5-6 hour stint that the books consider sleeping through the night. My 5 1/2 month old son has regressed from a 6-8 hour chunk without eating to only a 4 hour chunk and then it's every 2.5-3 hours after that...just like during the day! I have started rice cereal and fruit, hoping that would help but it doesn't. every night my husband tried to get him back to sleep but he just cries louder and louder until I nurse him. I also try to rock him/shhhh him for like 15 minutes before I nurse him. Once in a while he will fall back asleep, but it only lasts 10 minutes and then he's up again. So it's really easier just to feed him. I want to make sure we're not encouraging a bad habit though by feeding him 2-3 times throughout the night. So when/how did your baby stop? did you have to help them or do they just eventually stop waking up? Is it weird that he slept longer before eating when he was 2-4 months old? Is it common to regress like this? this is not a growth spurt or teething as it has been going on for about 2 months. Lilly's mommy, I hope she continues too. My son started off like that too, but it only lasted a couple months (until I got used to sleeping again!)

A: My son is exactly the same way! I started to put him down earlier b/c he gets soo cranky if he's not in bed (for the night) by 8pm. So now he goes to bed at 7:30 and is sleeping a 7 hour stretch (till about 2:30, 3am). But then he gets up and wants to nurse every 2 hours after that. I know he is getting his long stretch (its just to early for me! :) ) I've tried to push back his bedtime - but that doesn't really work...he needs his sleep. So I've been told (haven't tried it yet) to wake him up 2 hours after I put him down for the night (so around 9:30) and feed him. They say that then his 7:30-9:30 sleep will be like a nap. Forcing his 'bedtime' to be at 9:30, and then he should do his 7-8 hour (hopefully longer) sleep after 9:30. Thats just the advice i've been given. Haven't tried it yet.
